San Francisco BANS selling puppies

by Rizo Black, 8 March 2017

The Independent (newspaper) on 18/02/2017 announced, that San Francisco (USA) officials have voted to BAN THE SALE of PUPPIES in pet shops. The shops are ONLY allowed to sell RESCUE dogs and cats.

This regulation is a part of a concerted campaign to ABOLISH “inhumane” puppy breeding in the city, so called PUPPY MILLS (i.e. mass production of animals), which are a real problem all over the world (remember the article from Poland on cracking the puppy mill? —> read: Illegal Puppy Mill Cracked

The same regulation BANS THE SALE of puppies UNDER EIGHT WEEKS old. WHY?
Because when a puppy is taken away from the “nest” too soon, they are not capable of living on their own:
– they can get undernourished (as they have no access to the nutritious mother’s milk),
– have behavioral problems (are not exposed to the observation process),
– get immune deficiency (the necessary bacteria and antibodies might not get transmitted)

The law will not affect licenced breeders.

The first AIM is to eliminate the large-scale “puppy mills”.
The other AIM is to help to facilitate the adoption of thousands of animals occupying the city’s shelters.

WHY SUCH A LAW?

“Most animal lovers are horrified at the thought of keeping their beloved family pet in a dirty wire CAGE for a second — let alone a week, month or even years. Yet, that is the fate of many animals at large-scale commercial breeding operations across the nation, including the MOTHERS of many puppies and kittens sold in pet shops” wrote the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

“In response, more than 200 CITIES and counties across the nation have banned the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores.” Such REGULATIONS have already been implemented in US in Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston and Austin.

Mimi Bekhechi, PETA’s director of international programmes, praised the decision as “progressive” and example-setting.

We hope that BAN ON SALES will effectively SHRINK the ‘puppy production’, as points of sale are the key factor. We all should be VIGILANT and WATCH what’s going on in the Internet – if you see somebody selling animals – REPORT IT to the POLICE! It’s against the law!!!

Whenever we pass a pet shop and see those curled, frightened RABBITS / HAMSTERS / GUINEA PIGS in tiny glass tanks,we get depressed & angry. Personally we think that there should be BAN on selling ALL ANIMALS… What is your opinion?
